In 1920 a group of caleños and bugeños moved by the novel "La María" decided to make a tribute to its writer Jorge Isaac with the construction of a theater in his name.
The theater was built in 1931 mainly by the initiative of Mr. engineer Hermann S. Bohmer. He performed with a French neoclassical style.
The November 26 of 1984 the theater was a national monument and in 1986 was acquired by the city administration. After many years of neglect was restored and opened in July of 1989 leaving Conditioning theatrical latest techniques for different shows.
